From Don C-C
First Presbyterian Church of St. James, MN
is committed to living out a vision where all
who enter it's sanctuary experience a safe place
to learn what it means to be loved and accepted
just the way we are. This vision is a gift God
has given us through His Son Jesus, which we
are called to make flesh for a broken and
"Unless the Lord builds the house,
its builders labor in vain."
IN SERVICE TO GOD
From 1870, when this church first met in a boxcar
under the leadership of John Robertson McLean,
until today, in 2010, we have served this community
as God would want us to. McLean was born in Nova
Scotia in 1847. He came to St. James in 1870 and
was the first permanent resident. He was not a
minister, he was a man who believed that his work
included serving God. At the age of 23, he requested
permission from the Mankato Presbytery to start
this church in September of 1870. Permission was
granted and the church began with 18 charter
members. Their first worship services were held in
a boxcar, and then in a church constructed in 1880 to
the granite church built on the same site in 1946 to
the current church that now stands proudly on land
donated by the Omaha Railroad Company. We continue to serve not just the people of our
congregation but of our community and our county.
We are a serving church. A church that has learned
the importance of prayer and the importance of
service, not just to our own members but to the
community at large. We believe that we are loved
and accepted just as we are, but that simply means
that when we start with that belief, we can move mountains.
As we celebrate 140 years in St. James, we also
celebrate 140 years of service to God and
humankind. Come and join us on Sunday morning.
Summer hours are: Church at 9:30 and coffee hour
following. Starting September 12th, we move to our
10:15 worship time, followed by a coffee hour.
Sunday School for 3 year olds and older, including adults, begins before church at 9:00. Working
together, we can accomplish great things.
