Winter has arrived in Minnesota. It is time to think about what happens to your instrument and bow when the heat in the house comes on and the air starts to get dry. If we lived in a climate that was stable year round (50% humidity, 70 degrees Farenheit), we would never have to worry. In Minnesota, summers can get extremely hot and humid and winters can get extremely cold and dry. The best way to protect your instrument and bow in winter is to provide humidity in the room where you keep the instrument. A humidifier designed for the size of the room is appropriate. Knowing what humidity you are dealing with helps too. Get a digital hygrometer to keep in the room. When the room air gets down to 40% it's time to start the humidifier. If you ignore it, you may end up with pegs unwinding, cracks in the top, open seams, or broken strings on the violin, or hair in the bow that shrinks and puts unintended tension on the bow.
