Ian Shapinsky is an active concert pianist, teacher, and lecturer. He is a graduate of The Juilliard School of Music and has studied with Jascha Zayde, Madame Ania Dorfmann, Rhosina Lhevinne, Nadia Reisenberg, and Sonya Gurewich, all famous teachers.
His brilliant piano playing in many tours both in the U.S. and abroad has won him critical acclaim and distinction. His awards and prizes are many: namely, Recitalist of the Year, The Presidential Citation from the N.Y. Federation of Music Clubs, first prize in piano in the Five Towns Music and Art Foundation competition, prizes from the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Mannes College Concerto competition, First Prize in Piano, two Miami Beach National competitions, and several grants from the Rubin Foundation and a performing grant from IBM.
He has been concertizing for more than 40 years, touring in the U.S. and Europe. He started touring Europe in 1968 and has played in numerous cities and capitols there. Starting at age nine, he performed in cello-piano recitals with his late father, Aaron Shapinsky. He also has the distinction of being accepted at The Juilliard School at age 15 at the college level.
Ian currently performs in solo piano recitals, in chamber music, as a soloist in concertos, in duo piano recitals, master classes, and lecture recitals, including programs for children and families. He performs on radio, television, and in live stage concerts. Another skill is his ability to step in at the last minute for other performers as a concert pianist, accompanist, and lecturer. His concerts are a mixture of dazzling virtuosity, wonderful musicianship, sensitivity, humor, and dedication to making great music.
Two of Ian's recordings are available for purchase from this web site. More recordings are in progress.
Someone once mentioned "If you really want to think about Ian Shapinsky as a performer, imagine him giving a wonderful concert on top of a beautiful mountain in Switzerland, castles in Europe, a culture barn in Germany with animals, TV and radio studios in different countries, many school auditoriums for kids in many countries, famous concert halls, libraries, museums, outdoor tents, private homes, theaters, a gas station in Queens, and the United Nations."
"Mr. Shapinsky is a very likable artist. Both in his unassuming stage manner and his becoming lack of interpretive excess, he projects a modesty that puts musical values over self display, a happy characteristic in a pianist with so big a virtuoso technique."
"Ian Shapinsky offered a rich program that demonstrated an uncommon musicality, technical virtuosity, something special to say, and the ability to communicate superbly."
"Shapinsky was both a sensitive musician and spellbinding, flawless virtuoso. This is a rare blend of qualities and one that the aware audience recognizes with a standing ovation at the conclusion of the program."
