George Hegland served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1966. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he attended Mankato State University and graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1969. From 1969 to 1972 he worked for UNIVAC in St. Paul, Minnesota as a contract administrator. In 1973 he joined his father in the Orville T. Hegland Agency, and in 1985 he completed the purchase of the agency. The agency moved to their present location at 106 N. Third Avenue, Virginia, Minnesota, in 1995. Other agencies that have merged with the Hegland Agency are the Queen City Federal Agency in 1986 and the Mt. Iron Agency in 1991.
Orville Hegland came to Virginia in 1932 as an employee of Sears Roebuck. Orville was very active in civic affairs through the years, serving as President of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Kiwanis Club, and Exalted Ruler of the Virginia Elks Club. In 1944 he started the Orville T. Hegland Agency. While operating the agency, he was able to merge other local agencies with his, among them being the Charlotte Luke Agency, the Nate Keller Agency, the Thurston Agency, and the Brundage Agency. Orville retired in 1975.
