Visitors to Long Prairie have come for many years to enjoy the history, recreation, museums, and other activities. Long Prairie's history dates back to the first white settlement within Todd County. Prior to it being the first settlement the land was roamed by the Sioux and Chippewa Indian Tribes. In 1845 the government selected the location known as Long Prairie as a site for an Indian agency. Approximately 400 to 700 Winnebago Indians from Illinois were brought to this agency. The total population of Long Prairie in 1849 was close to 3000 people. The first hotel in Todd County was built in 1869 by Ignatius Reichert. The present Reichert Hotel building has been renovated into apartments. Today Long Prairie is a community of over 3000 residents. Although agriculture is still a vital part of the local economy, Long Prairie enjoys the economic benefits of many large industries, county seat, large hospital and nursing home complex, and new high school campus. Long Prairie serves as the major retail center for most of Todd County. A well balanced variety of stores has helped the retailers of the community withstand the difficulties of other rural areas.
