Susan Still will share her amazing story as a survivor of domestic violence
Susan Still appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and 20/20 to bring awareness to domestic violence and its effects on families. Susan is a survivor of 24 years of emotional and physical abuse by her former husband. Her ex-husband had one of their children videotape while he was abusing her - their mother. Mr. Still received a 36-year sentence, the longest sentence given for the crime of domestic violence where the victim survived.
After a three year process including careful consideration of feedback from community surveys, staff input, supporter and partner recommendations, agency collaborators, and participants of our service programs, the Shelter House Board of Directors passed a resolution to change the organization name to "Safe Avenues". The name was chosen to better communicate the varied programs and services offered including safe shelter for battered women and their children, advocacy for victims of domestic abuse, advocacy for victims of sexual assault, safety planning and advocacy for child witnesses of family violence, and supervised visitation or visitation exchange for children at risk of abuse.
Safe Avenues; for healing, for justice, for peace, for all!
New mission statement:
To inspire social change while restoring safety, value and dignity to all in the cycle of interpersonal violence including children at risk of abuse and survivors of domestic abuse or sexual assault.
New vision statement:
A united community committed to the safety of all.
DBA: The name Shelter House has been reserved for continued use for the shelter program.
Therefore, at the shelter program, we will still answer the phone: Shelter House
The 4th Annual Shelter House Gala held May 1st was the best Gala ever.
