Fall Care for Perennials
Water frequently throughout the fall, especially during dry periods.
Apply small quantities of bone meal on the soil around the base of your plants, this is good for root development.
Should you have any perennials in raised patio gardens or containers, these plants will need to be transplanted into
the garden. Allow at least three weeks prior to final freeze for the roots to establish.
Cut your plants back in the spring! Pruning in the spring increases the plants survival rate over winter. Growth left standing traps snow, and for plants and roots, snow is excellent protection. Lilies and peonies are exceptions to this rule, and also are better to be divided in the fall, where all other perennials are best divided in the spring. If you insist on cutting them back, wait until the plant leaves become brown and dry, green branches feed roots. Never cut back biennials or evergreen perennials, and do not cut back newly planted [this year] perennials. New plants need the extra protection that snow provides, and leaving top-growth intact helps trap snow on them.
Just before the ground freezes in late fall, water all plant heavily again to prevent root damage by cold, dry soil.
For those plants that may be on the edge of hardiness for our zone area, a good idea is to mulch these plants with about 12 of mulch material. A very good material for this is peat moss, as it allows air to penetrate, but keeps the extreme cold off the roots. Leaves and grass clippings are not advised as they will rot. Another good cover material is spruce branches. Sprinkling garden soil over the top of the peat will help it stay in place.
September is the best time to split and move peonies.

Kentucky Coffee Tree, Gymnocladus dioicus
This tree has deeply furrowed bark and stout branches that are
particularly handsome in winter. Picturesque in summer and winter, coarse
ascending branches often form a narrow crown. Oval leaflets emerge late in
spring, changing from pinkish-tinged to a dark, almost blue-green. Tolerates
most conditions, drought and pollution. Is adaptable to many conditions such
as alkaline soil, salt, and drought, The mahogany seed pods are long and
leathery. Needs full sun, grows to about 60, 45 spread. Zone 3. Available
The black walnut is one of our best known and most valuable trees. It is
a large, straight-stemmed timber tree with an open crown. When grown in the
open it is a short-trunked, low-branching, wide-spreading tree. Widely planted
for its nuts, lumber and for ornamental purposes. Oval to rounded shape, grows
to a large tree of up to 75 tall and wide! Dark green foliage, yellow fall
color. It does prefer rich, well- drained soil. The fruit is a large, rounded,
brownish black nut with a hard, thick, finely ridged shell enclosing a rich,
oily kernel. The kernel is edible and highly nutritious. The nut is enclosed
in a solid, non-splitting husk, and is borne on the tree singly or in pairs.
Practically everyone recognizes a walnut tree when the nuts are on it. Their
distinct shape, pattern and smell are hard to miss. The thick bark is dark
brown in color and divided by deep fissures into rounded ridges. It has a
chocolate brown under-color when broken from the tree. Available, 6
An interesting new small accent tree for home landscape use, selected
primarily for its outstanding fall color, yellowish-green flowers and rounded
growth habit. Autumn Splendor Buckeye has dark green foliage throughout the
season. The palm-shaped leaves turn an outstanding tomato-orange in the fall.
It features showy spikes of creamy white flowers rising above the foliage in
mid spring. This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers to
grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It
is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban
pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. Height 35, spread
