Mount Benedict Monastery in Utah to Join Sisters of Saint Benedict
The eight Sisters of Mount Benedict Monastery in Ogden, Utah, will transfer their professions to the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., in a private ceremony at the monastery on Saturday, November 20, 2010. Six members will continue to provide a monastic presence in Utah following the transfer.
The first Benedictine Sisters traveled to Utah from St. Joseph in 1944, in response to a request from city and county officials to build and operate St. Benedict’s Hospital in Ogden (now Ogden Regional Medical Center). Over the years, the Sisters’ work has expanded to include education, parish and retreat work.
The Sisters separately incorporated as an independent monastery in 1994 with 11 Sisters. They began immediate plans to build a monastery, which was completed in 1999.
All eight Sisters of Mount Benedict Monastery entered monastic life and made their first professions at Saint Benedict’s Monastery in Minnesota. Sister Virgene Marx is currently at Saint Scholastica Convent, and Sister Marilyn Mark has been living and active in ministry at Saint Benedict’s Monastery for over a year. She is currently the director of faith formation at St. Wendelin’s Church in Luxemburg, Minn.
The other six Sisters who will transfer their profession are Ss. Danile Knight, Luke Hoschette, Jean Gibson, Stephanie Mongeon, Mary Zenzen and Iris Beckwith. The six will return to live in the monastery in Ogden, providing retreat space and continuing in their prayer life and ministry.
