Northern Lights would like to congratulate Sheila Packa on becoming Duluth's new Poet Laureate for 2010-2012.

Sheila Packa has published poems, short stories, and essays in many literary magazines and anthologies, and she does readings and spoken word performances. She grew up on the Iron Range in northern Minnesota, the granddaughter of Finnish immigrants, and lives near Duluth, MN.

Her work has been featured in the Anthology of Finnish-North American Literature in English (Mellen Press), Beloved of the Earth: Poems of Grief and Gratitude (Holy Cow Press) and to Sing Along the Way: Minnesota Women Poets from Pre-Territorial Days to the Present (New Rivers Press). She has received a Loft Mentor Award in Poetry, two Arrowhead Regional Arts Council fellowships for poetry, two Loft McKnight Awards (one in poetry and one in prose) a career opportunity from the ARAC.

She is the current recipient of an Arts and Cultural Heritage Community Arts Learning to do poetry workshops in partnership with the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project.

"Lake Superior Writers established the position of Duluth Poet Laureate in 2006 as a way of honoring area poets and encourage the enjoyment of poetry.
Duluth poet Sheila Packa has been selected as the 2010-2012 Duluth Poet Laureate, in an open selection process by the Lake Superior Writer's poet laureate committee. for her two year term, Ms. Packa will receive an honorarium of $3,000 and will organize five public events.
