Our Point of View on Technology
The times are a-changin', and so is the technology available to revolutionize the practices of structural engineering, architecture and manufacturing.
Elliott Speaks at AIA MN and IA Conventions
11/17/2010 – Meghan Elliott, P.E., an Associate of Meyer Borgman Johnson, recently spoke at two regional AIA conventions, one in Des Moines, Iowa, (September 29 October 1) and the other in Minneapolis, Minnesota, (November 2-5). At both conventions, she participated as one of a three-person panel leading a session entitled Construction History: An Integrative Approach to Practice & History. Discussing the unique four-way concrete slab system of nineteenth-century structural designer C.A.P. Turner, Elliott illustrated her talk by showing historic buildings representing Turners designs in the Minneapolis Warehouse District. Her co-panelists were Dr. Lee Gray, Associate Professor in the UNC-Charlotte School of Architecture and Associate Dean in the UNCC College and Thomas Leslie, AIA, Associate Professor of Architecture at Iowa State University.
An excerpt of Tom Leslie’s abstract for the presentation reads as follows: “This session will introduce the emerging discipline of Construction History and explain how it has broadened the study of architectural history by making new links to regional industry and traditions. Construction History has drawn a diverse group of architects, engineers, academics and preservationists; it suggests that the stories of building engineering, design, and construction are valid partners to the more established emphases on stylistic and cultural factors. This broader focus often ties buildings to regional economies and industries, showing how native materials and techniques often influence construction and design. This offers a more holistic understanding of historic structures and regional building traditions in North America. Read Leslies comments about the Iowa presentation at architecturefarm.

At MBJ, her work has focused firm attention on developing relationships with medical facility managers and providing ongoing structural engineering services for area hospitals and clinics, including Fairview-Riverside and Methodist. As a member of the Twin Cities Healthcare Engineering Association, she remains current with engineering practices related to healthcare clients. In addition to her experience in the healthcare market, Peterson has also worked extensively on aviation, commercial, and education projects. She is currently project manager of structural engineering services on the Hennepin County Northeast Library in Minneapolis. Petersons leadership capabilities extend beyond the firms doors into the larger engineering community through her participation in a number of professional organizations, including the Council of American Engineers-Minnesota as Past President and Membership Committee Chair, the Structural Engineering Institute as a member of the Public Relations and Poster Committees, and the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations as a member of the Business Practice and Poster Committees. Peterson earned her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri.
