Karen Marty served as an in-house city attorney for cities in Minnesota and Missouri for 15 years before entering private practice. Through this experience she learned the internal processes by which cities reach decisions, as well as the details and traps of zoning, development, and municipal law. Since entering private practice, she has often worked for developers and has come to fully appreciate the financial and time constraints that developers and property owners face in dealing with government. Understanding both sides enables her to find the fastest and most cost-effective solution to many land use and government issues.
Ms. Marty’s background and experience enable her to provide clients with practical advice for handling matters outside the courtroom, as well as representing clients in litigation and appeals. In addition to this traditional legal work, Ms. Marty has conducted special investigations for cities, and regularly serves as an administrative law judge, hearing appeals from city actions. Some of the matters she has handled are as follows:
Land Use Law - Zoning, conditional use permits, development agreements, subdivisions and plats, and variances.
Municipal Law - Administrative law, personnel and employment issues, eminent domain, open meeting law, and real estate issues.
Real Estate Law - Adverse possession, boundary disputes, deeds, easements, homeowners' associations, purchase and sale of land, restrictive covenants, and title problems.
Special Investigations- Investigation of allegations of employee misconduct, sexual harassment, and conflicts of interest.
Administrative Hearings - Liquor license suspension or termination, tobacco license issues, dangerous dogs, employment termination, and rental assistance (Section 8 housing).
Litigation and Appeals- Motions, trial, and appeals in civil matters, with emphasis on land use, municipal, and real estate cases.
General Practice Matters - Simple and complex contracts, and simple wills and trusts.
